Behind the Shadows: My Scariest Night

When I was in high school, I have a night that I will always remember. Before this night, I had no issues with bats what-so-ever, but it changed me forever...
I was alone in the house, it was late. I was watching TV with most of the lights out. I noticed a shadow moving above me and it grabbed my attention. At first, I didn't see what caused the shadow so my attention went back to the movie. Then I saw it again. Intrigued, I kept watching the ceiling, trying to figure out if my imagination was playing tricks with me. And then it flew right above me. It was a bat.
I knew bats are nocturnal so I ran through every room of the house, turning on lights as I ducked with a squeal each time the bat flew over my head. I opened the back door, hoping the darn thing would be smart enough to go outside. I ran upstairs and turned on those lights. The darn thing followed me upstairs. Yeah, I'm really freaking out now because it was getting close every time it flew over my head. I ran back downstairs and closed the door since it wasn't trying to escape.
As the hours slowly went by, I was getting tired. Still alone, I knew I wasn't going to be able to sleep unless I did the one thing I couldn't do--sleep with my head under the covers. I left every light on, fearing that if I couldn't see it, it would make things worse. I don't know how long it took for me to finally fall asleep, but I did. The next thing I remember, my little sister was waking me up. I jumped.
That was the scariest night I've ever had. Now when I see a real bat, I think of that night and how everyone thought I was stupid or drunk the next morning. Yes, my parents thought I had been drinking--until my mother saw the bat sleeping on the windowpane. No "I'm sorry, you were right" speeches, just more screaming. My mother, not me. My dad got the bat out of the house, but the memory still haunts me.
What was your scariest night? Or scariest event? Happy Halloween!
